Overview of the Irish Quarter
Birmingham's Irish Quarter has existed in practice for some 50 years, mainly situated around St Anne's Church and community club where many of the Irish Community initially settled.
Whilst the community itself has now dispersed, the Irish Community still has a strong affinity with this area of the city, as it contains a wealth of Irish based businesses, independent Irish bars, The Irish Club and the headquarters for the Irish Forum which represents in excess of 70 Irish based organisations.
Its location is within easy walking distance of The Bull Ring redevelopment incorporating a wealth of shops with household names such as Selfridges, Debenhams, making it ideally placed for future growth and expansion.
Current proposals involve a range of redevelopment projects designed to rejuvenate a former industrial area into a range of residential and commercial properties. Whilst retaining the "soul" of the existing Quarter.
With it's close proximity to the City Centre, this area which is the historical birthplace of Birmingham, will provide a range of exciting development opportunities.
The Digbeth area has a rich heritage of traditional buildings, historic grid iron street patterns and streetscape. This provides an inspirational environment for new development and includes a wealth of buildings for business, leisure and residential opportunities. The City Council's Environmental Vocabulary contains additional information and guidance.
The extensive redevelopments which are already underway within parts of the Irish Quarter signify a significant sea change that will see the area transformed into a vibrant bohemian style residential and commercial urban environment.
